Football and Life
|
Please excuse the indulgence of this thread but ten days ago my father died suddenly.
Although he had been unwell things had really been picking up recently and there was some hope that he might be on an upward turn. Sadly that was clearly not the case.
I have been in something of a state of shock since then. He was 70, no age for anyone these days.
The point of this thread is that for the vast majority of time football is a big part of my life but always just a sideshow to the really important stuff.
Tonight Ogbonna's goal gave me a moment of intense gutteral joy that I had briefly forgotten was possible. Sometimes football can be so much more.
Thank you Angelo and good night chaps.

Thank you everyone for your replies. We have the funeral to get through tomorrow. It does always amaze me how our simple connection to West Ham can be enough for such kind and thoughtful words from essentially complete strangers. Ive been on this site for around 20 years and its always been this way. I love this club. COYI. X

Sorry to hear about your dad Mr T, May he rest in peace. I like to think my brothers and dad are up there enjoying this season and having a chuckle at Chelsea being in the bottom half of the table.

Football support has to be put into perspective. Carlo Ancelloti says " football to many fans is the most important of the least important things in life".

Terrible time for you Mr T , wish you well, times a great healer but you won't ever forget or want to. Lost my dad , who brought up my sister and me by himself when he was only 54 who died in his sleep. We were 18 and 20 and all of a sudden dealing with the real world . As said before they wouldn't want you to not live your life to the full and enjoy as much as you can , even if you do feel guilty for laughing or cheering at times.
Best way I dealt with it was by thinking that I ( and others) were lucky to have known him. Can now look back and remember without the heartache.
Best wishes.

Your Dad would expect you to live your life to its fullness and enjoy every moment. Both my Mum and Dad have died in the last 15 months. Its hard not to grieve but they wouldnt want it.

Mr T, sorry about your loss, Ogbonna made me sleep with an massive grin on my boat too...
Football isn't really as important as we make it sometimes, but just a good way to get away from what is...

Sorry about your pops, it's a horrible thing to go through I know. That's why we love football so much, not just an escapism from all the crap life throws at us but unbridled joy for sonething we all know deep down isn't really important - it helps!

Sorry to hear about Your dad mate.
Life goes on, and though it is extremely hard when it is so fresh in the mind there are chinks of light just as you said regarding your team winning a very important game that will give you some positivity that you have not felt since his passing and that is very normal. Lost two cousins last year one was 33 (Brothers son) the other was 59 he was my mums sisters son, horrid time for me that was but you cannot die with the dead they remain forever in your heart and mind, especially a Dad. R.I.P to dad and strength to you and the family.
